Ten years for One image

The US Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by a high school teacher from Arizona sentenced to 200 years in jail for possessing child pornography.

...the prosecutor had asked for a 340-year sentence but the trial judge imposed the minimum of 10 years for each of 20 images - to be served consecutively for a total of 200 years without the possibility of probation, early release or pardon.

This news is quite alarming. A 200-year sentence for possessing 20 images of "child porn" is too much more than a reasonable punishment; it's in fact more of a cruelty than of a punishment.

If the court punishes him for 200 years in jail, then why doesn't it also find the posters (or should I call them "models"?) for those images? I highly doubt that they have been threatened to post for the porn pictures.

According to this study, one third of the boys' population could be ending up in jail for their life if they all happen to be in Arizona and be caught. LOL!

Until then...

Dell Computers to Come with Linux

It's a good news that Dell is planning to sell computers with Linux (Free) pre-installed. That's good for those techies who can do just anything in Linux. And with the latest Beryl installed, some advanced users might also like it; in fact, Beryl is way too better than the animations of Windows Aero.

There's also a price advantage: Dell might be able to reduce the price for not having Windows on its machine. That's good for some people (like me) who have got a Vista license separately and doesn't need a new Vista on the new machine.

BitTorrent to offer movies legally

BitTorrent is going to offer movies to download legally at a nominal price. New titles will probably cost you around a little more than 3 bucks but old ones will be available at less than 2 bucks for each download.

But, they can be watched in Windows Media Player 11 only since the contents are protected by Microsoft's DRM. And, no matter whether you watch it or not after the download finishes, the movie will expire in 30 days. So, download only when you want to and have time to watch it. And, once you watch it, you can't get it back on the next day, that is, 24 hours since you start to watch it. If the movie is 3 hours long, maximum number of time you can repeat is 8. :D

Just after I read the news, I tried to access BitTorrent site but was greeted by the following message:

YouTube Index-only Videos

I'm not against removing from YouTube some contents which violate the prevailing copyright laws. But, this is just ridiculous. Once they have removed the content, why don't they also delete the index of that video at the same time (or very soon)? I searched for a content but hate to see all those warning messages whenever I click on a result.

Vista Pirated

Microsoft has taken all possible steps to protect their latest and most advanced OS. Still all efforts are turning out in vain as according to reports the operating system is already been cracked by some Iranian hackers.

...you can easily get your hands to this pirated version for just $8. I don’t think this is the response that Microsoft expected from their ‘Most Advanced Operating System’.

A better strategy is to lower the price considerably rather than invest yet another billion of dollars into piracy protection which so far has not worked yet.

Google Presently

Google is about to release a new product to its Office Products suite: Google Presently (to rhyme with Writely). It's gonna be a keystone product to Google Office.

I have been using Docs and Spreadsheets extensively but was frustrated when I have to launch MS PowerPoint to view the ppt files. Now, I can just have all my office documents in Google. Cool.

Until then...
