Windows Internet Explorer 7 Released

Microsoft has released the final version of Windows Internet Explorer 7 on Wednesday. Since Internet Explorer 6, about 5 years ago, this is the first major upgrade to the Microsoft's Internet browser which holds a large share of browser market despite competition from Firefox.

In this version, Microsoft names its Internet Explorer as Windows Internet Explorer 7 compared to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 in a move to branding all its products under the umbrella term Windows, which is more obvious in its next generation Operating System Windows Vista.

New features in Internet Explorer 7 since the version 6 are, to name a few, Phishing filter, a Refreshing new look, Tabbed browsing, better security and better memory management (which is one feature that beats Firefox).

You can now download it from Microsoft website. If you do not choose to download it yourself but you enabled Automatic Updates, chances are that you will sooner or later get prompted to install Internet Explorer 7 because Microsoft has made it an essential upgrade through Automatic Updates. There are some work-around if you are very repulsive to Internet Explorer 7.

Vista Licensing

With the new Operating System from Microsoft, piracy will be a difficult matter for end-users. I'm not sure whether the intended geeks will still be able to crack MS's routine validation checks; just wait until the products come out. But, for most of the users, Windows Vista BitTorrent Version will not work like Windows XP BitTorrent Versions.

So, if you are an enthusiastic users of Vista and want to switch to it, you might be wondering about the "myths" of its Licensing Policies.

This is a good article on this matter, and while I believe it will not clear all your doubts, it is indeed a good place to start to scutinize the policy.

Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Type http://www.writely.com or http://spreadsheets.google.com

Do you get there? Neither!

Now where you get is a new place called Google Docs & Spreadsheets whose url is http://docs.google.com

That's the place where you can see all your writely and spreadsheets documents. You want to create one? Choose which type you want and you can do it now, right from the same place.

This is a good combination that Google has done. But, I was wondering why Google doesn't include them in Google App for Your Domain. Also, why not include Notebook in this package? I assume Notebook is where I take notes to write my documents. So I think it should be there.

10-Megapixel Camera Phone

Samsung Electronics will put a 10-megapixel camera phone on the market in South Korea shortly.

SCH-B600 is styled to look like a conventional digital still camera from one side and a bar-type cell phone from the other side. It has a 3X optical zoom lens like those typically found in digital still cameras, auto focus, manual focus, continuous and time-delay picture taking and a flash.

It will cost 900,000 won (US$950) in South Korea, and Samsung said it won’t be selling it in other markets.

This build has been there for a few days. Testers say it has improvements since RC1 (5600). If you wanna test it out on your machine, you can download it from here. You will need a CD key that has been provided to you in Beta 2 CPP.

For me, frankly, I haven't seen any reason why I should upgrade to Vista. Anything can be done on my XP machine with some third-party goodies.

Google's copyright nightmare

I worry about my playlists at YouTube. They might be removed in future...

Google's takeover of video-sharing website YouTube may look like a nifty business move. For the company's legal team, however, it may soon turn into a long and nasty nightmare.

Besides all the gorgeous and goofy home videos, YouTube (like other video websites) hosts plenty of pirated content.

Until now most copyright holders had little incentive to sue YouTube. The company was young and rapidly burning through its venture capital.

Now that YouTube is part of the Google empire, with a market capitalisation of $129bn (£70bn), there is a serious incentive to let the lawyers off the leash.

Things don't have to be quite so gloomy.

Google will try to entice them with a similar carrot: We have the big audience, and the distribution technology to host your videos; in return you will get a share of any advertising money we make around your content.

...

Google has been burnt before. Google Print was a plan to scan all books and make them searchable. Authors and publishers around the world unleashed their fury on the search giant.

No doubt Google will have to work hard to steer YouTube into safe waters.

Solid content identification, video watermarking, royalty reporting and clearer upload guidelines for YouTube members are a must.

There is just one drawback: For some members that could take all the fun out of YouTube.

Without fun, they might go elsewhere.

Giant camel fossil found in Syria

Archaeologists have discovered the 100,000-year-old fossilised remains of a previously unknown giant camel species in Syria.

The animal is thought to have been double the size of a modern-day camel.

...The camel's shoulders stood three metres high and it was around four metres tall, as big as a giraffe or an elephant. Nobody knew that such a species had existed...

The big species has been found as far back as 150,000 years ago. But fossils from other species of camel have been unearthed at the site dating as far back as one million years.

Sixty bodies have been found scattered across the Iraqi capital Baghdad, police there have said.

[They] were found in various parts of the city over a 24-hour period, defence and interior ministry officials said on Tuesday.

Many of them had been shot in the head at close range, execution-style.

A car bomb has also exploded near a Sunni mosque in a southern district of the city, killing 10 people.

[The] bomb was placed under a car near a mosque in the district of Doura, killing 10 bystanders, police said.

The bomb - which also injured at least four people - exploded at about 1100 GMT.

New bird species found

The diversity of the biosphere is immense!

A colorful bird new to science has been discovered in a remote Andean cloud forest, spurring efforts to protect the area, conservation groups have announced.

The bright yellow and red-crowned Yariguies brush-finch was named for the indigenous tribe that once inhabited the mountainous area...

The small bird can be distinguished from its closest relative by its solid black back and the lack of white marks on its wings.

"There are about two new birds found in the world every year," Thomas Donegan...

The new finch, the size of a fist, is native to Colombia's eastern Andean range and considered by its discoverers to be near threatened and in need of close monitoring to prevent it winding up on a list of about 100 bird species endangered in Colombia.

Web...the ground for plagiarism?

Apart from doing research online, are we tempted to copy and paste its contents into our work?

Even the most efficient student would have agonized over the assignment -- a 30-page term paper on the social value of literary criticism.

But Richard finished it in one evening, cutting and pasting paragraphs off the Internet for an online company that sells papers to desperate U.S. college students.

The Internet has given students access to reams of information,......it has also given a new lease on life to an old plague of academia -- the term-paper mill.

The Web is home to dozens of sites like the one Richard worked for -- including Custom Research Papers (http://customresearchpapers.us/), ThePaperExperts.com (http://thepaperexperts.com/) and Term Paper Relief (http://termpaperrelief.com/) -- that sell term papers for about $15 a page.

...according to a 2006 poll of 60,000 U.S. college students by Donald McCabe,...Three percent admitted to downloading and submitting entire papers and 77 percent of students did not consider copying material off the Internet to be a serious issue.

The Deal is made...finally

Finally, the acquisition is settled. What will become of YouTube in near future? Wait and see...

Google has agreed to purchase popular video sharing site YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock.......the largest acquisition for Google in the company's eight-year history.

The deal was reportedly developed in less than a week, and is a massive sum for a company with just 67 employees that was founded only 19 months ago.

"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement.

"By joining forces with Google, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners," remarked YouTube CEO and co-founder Chad Hurley.

YouTube will retain its brand name and offices in San Bruno, Calif., the companies said, and all YouTube employees will keep their jobs.

Sony Pictures plans to make available the first 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc on Tuesday...

Although Blu-ray movies have been available since June, none have employed a second layer of data, which doubles the disc's capacity.

The extra 25GB of space will be used for interactivity and extras, such as high-definition bonus features and uncompressed PCM audio.

Sony will release "Black Hawk Down" and "Talladega Nights" in 50GB versions before the end of the year. 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate each plan to release one dual-layer Blu-ray movie as well.

Tribute to Ms Anna Politkovskaya

To many of us Anna Politkovskaya will remain the epitome of what a journalist should be.

A softly-spoken and serious woman who always talked in measured terms, she was deeply concerned about what was happening in her country.

...while she was one of the best known Russian journalists in the West, she had been "effectively silenced" in Russia itself.

Vladimir Putin has been carefully nurturing, particularly during the build-up to the G-8 summit three months ago, an image of Russia as struggling forward towards democracy.

Anna Politkovskaya's journalism seriously undermined that image. Her death undermines it even more.

Hundreds of Iraqi police poisoned

Hundreds of Iraqi policemen fell sick from poisoning Sunday at a base in southern Iraq after the evening meal breaking their daily Ramadan fast.

Between 600-700 policemen were affected to varying degrees, and 11 who had the heaviest amount of the food had died, al-Atwan told The Associated Press.

Some of the soldiers collapsed as soon as they stood up from the meal, others fell "one after the other" as they headed out to the yard in the base to line up in formation.

Some of the policemen began bleeding from the ears and nose after the meal, said Jassim al-Atwan, an inspector for the Environment Ministry.

Food and water at the base are provided by an Australian contractor working through Iraqi subcontractors.

Microsoft Hates Pirates!!!

Microsoft said Wednesday that it plans to clamp down hard on piraters of its next-generation operating systems, crippling both Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" if users fail to activate their copies within 30 days.

Only licensed copies would have access to Aero -- Vista's new user interface -- and ReadyBoost, which uses a flash drive to temporarily add more memory to a computer system.

Microsoft would also place a watermark on the desktop at all times that reads "This copy of Windows is not genuine."

With Vista, the activation isn't permanent. If Microsoft discovers that the user has used a product key without authorization, it will force the user to reactivate his or her copy of Windows.

35 percent of all software installed in 2005 was pirated and unlicensed. This represented some $35 billion in lost revenue for the software industry.

When you visit France, beware of this

France is to ban smoking in all public places from next February, the prime minister has announced.

Public places include stations, museums, government offices and shops, but not streets or private places such as houses or hotel rooms.

Opinion polls in France - often considered a nation of smokers - suggest 70% of the people support the ban, says the BBC's Valerie Jones
in Paris.

Mr de Villepin made the announcement in a television interview.

"We started on the basis of a simple observation - two figures: 60,000 deaths a year in our country linked directly to tobacco consumption and
5,000 deaths linked to passive smoking.

"That makes more than 13 deaths a day. It is an unacceptable reality in our country in terms of public health," he said.

In essense, this Groups Beta is a combinaton of Yahoo Groups + Gmail and Page Creator. Now I'm starting to transferring my Yahoo Groups to Google Groups!!!

CPU-Z

This is just a small .exe file which you can launch to view your system's specification at the considerably detailed level.

Windows System Properties does not show such high detail. So sometimes when we want to know the exact specification of our own computer, CPU-Z is a good solution to this problem.

Open Software CD/DVD

Sometimes we want to copy the setup files onto the hard disk so that we can reinstall the software later and faster since it is reading from the hard disk which is faster than CD or DVD. So, we go to My Computer and double-click to open the CD/DVD, but since most software CD/DVD's have Autorun.ini configuration file on the discs, instead of opening the CD/DVD to show you the files and folders, windows launches the installer as specified in the Autorun.ini.

One way to overcome this problem is to right-click the CD/DVD and click Open; this way, Windows Explorer will instead open up the CD/DVD to show you the contents.

There's another way you can use. This is to use Windows Explorer by clicking the Folders icon on the toolbar or press Win + E.
